Three Major Differences between Wooden and Plastic Pallets

Wooden pallets have been the most commonly used type in material handling for long. However in the past years, another viable alternative that has risen to popularity is the plastic pallet. Both types of pallets have their own set of characteristics and can be differentiated based on the following factors.

Cost

Wooden pallets Denver are cheaper in cost than plastic. Broken wooden pallets can be easily repaired unlike the plastic ones. For instance, replacing a piece of wood is much cheaper and easier than replacing the entire plastic pallet. However, plastic pallets are almost 30% lighter in weight and can reduce shipping costs while dealing with longer distances.

Environment-friendly

Wood is clearly the winner when the safety of the environment is considered. Wooden pallets can be made from recycled materials and can also be disposed safely at the end of their life. The concern over plastic pallets is not just the material itself but the use of flame retardants on the surface of the pallet that causes considerable impact to the environment.

Durability

The durability factor is just a flip of a coin between the two options. While sturdy wooden pallets tend to last longer, they readily succumb when exposed to water. This may also result in microbial growth making them unsuitable for certain industries. Plastic on the other hand is unaffected by water and can also be easily cleaned. The problem however is that wooden pallets can be repaired to prolong their life while plastic pallets must be disposed once broken.
